Title: Hello, new BX16V owver
Post by: Ade on August 27, 2010, 03:07:15 PM
Hi all,

Wow, what a great site that I've only just discovered. I'm a long time BX owner (BX16TGS) but have recently bought a 16VGTi, much to the dismay of my wife who wanted a Honda Odyssey (over my dead body). I've always wanted a 16V and this was too tempting to miss out on - it was for sale locally, not too high mileage, first registered in NZ. It needs a bit of work but nothing I can't handle.

So far I have replaced a broken heater valve (a *hit of a job, and one I've also recently had to do on the TGS), rebuilt the flow diverter valve (had a massive LHM leak), replaced the water pump and cam belt. I am trying to find some cam belt tensioners that are not worth more than I paid for the car, so if anyone knows a source let me know. Cheapest so far is 28 pounds each from UK, plus postage. I'm after a distributor cap and rotor and new set of plug leads (the engine has an annoying miss at light throttle, so am trying to eliminate possibilities) and inlet manifold gasket. I also need an oil filler pipe (between oil filler and sump) since I broke the side branch off due to age and heat-hardened rubber. The dealers want $180 for a new one from France (bugger that). Someone told me a bloke called pete on this forum had some pipes made up for a Pug Mi16 that should fit the BX. Does anyone know about this?

I'll post some pics as soon as it's out of the workshop.

Cheers,
Ade

I(/Alex's dad Terry) recently did the cambelt on my valver. Paid $114 ea for QH tensioners from BNT. Can't remember if that's GST incl or not.

Could you just put new bearings in your old ones? That's what Terry recommended I do next time.

Thanks for the welcome. It good to link up with others in NZ who have the same interest in BX's.

I live in Pohangina, which is about 25 mins north of Palmerston North.

I'll look into replacing the bearings in the tensioners. Thanks for the tip.

I think I may have heard of you through a friend, richard, from palmy. He works at a safety gear place or something.
Can't be many people on pohangina with a flock of bx's! Where abouts out there are you? I'm quite partial to the odd fang out those ways. Cool roads.
When I was still in school, I used to go out there most tuesdays and thursdays for a burn right up through to Apiti, then back down ridge road and come back out at colyton again, in my Mini. That was like, 2001/2002. Bloody good fun. Poor car used to run out of brakes fairly quickly too... drums all round and spirited driving = goodbye brakes. Even more concerning was the rate I went through exhausts. Usually I'd get home at like 6pm, and spend until about 9 or 10 fixing the creases, dents, and bends so I could drive to school the next day.... ahh those were the times. Often I'd drive home with just extractors, and my exhaust sitting in the cabin with me, poking out the passenger window. In hindsight, if I didn't run it with the sump at like 50mm from the ground even though I intended to drive it on gravel frequently, it would've lasted alot longer....
Haven't been right through there for a while, though. Must do it sometime.... Look out for a grubby red bx on sunday lol. I'm heading up to feilding tomorrow and if I've got time I might go for a burn! enough rambling, though...

Welcome to the site.

You might have luck at SKF for a timing kit. They'll probably do the bearings anyway, however, tread carefully there. you don't want it flying to bits on you!
Definitely pays to shop around. I'll probably be on the prowl for one myself next week so will post back to how I get on.
Any questions, feel free to sing out. don't be afriad by the weirdness that seemingly goes on here. we're a very approachble and friendly bunch!

SKF are stopping automotive bits so they don't do the timing belt kits anymore (at least that's what the guy on the phone told me)

Timing belt is about $35 from BNT and a waterpump is about $75 from EML

Welcome, adrian from BXclub i presume?!

Alas, i am not that knowledgeable, just the son of someone who is!

We have three 16vs in our family-as fourth will be on its way shortly i think, and one which is soon to be 200hp+ hopefully, the others just factory fresh.

Any queries, just ask-some clown on here will be able to help!

Ps... fucken forget about censoring swearing, thats the least of your worries- this site is the "rock 'n' roll" of french enthusiasts, ie we are the ones doin handbrakies at a cit meet!

Heh, dirty trouble makers.

I approve. Car meets should involve loud noises and a bit of hooliganism. Just not too much, or you turn into the rotary club.

I concur, but the generally swapmeets of the V8 camp are EPIC- lots of mint cars, heaps of junk, and 34645767586 GCs abound, but few munters. And those that fuck up, dont come back. Its all about a bit of vroom vroom/talk talk/buy buy/ balance, if that makes any sense ;D

Hi Ade

Welcome to the fast frogs forum. I myself are relatively new and currently reside in Aucks, but I'm moving down to Feilding in the next month or so.
Regarding your question on ignition leads and caps and rotors, Im currently in the process of getting a new set....it does pay to shop around.
So far most of the bargains I have come across are from ebay...which has its cons of dealing with freight and so forth.
Otherwise contact Andrew at Adlams his a good bloke he will sort something out for ya.
Enjoy the group

Regards Twin Cam

Hey there Ade, welcome to the site.

It's good to see another 16V joining the fray, at this rate we'll have NZ's share of road going 16V's all in the lower north island before long!

It's encouraging to know there's still a good pool of knowledge about these vehicles if you know where to look.

My BX is currently awaiting some minor WoF related repairs but I may see you at a FF meet soon.

Please post some photos when you get a chance.

Cheers, Nick.

Did you get the black one off a guy in Western Springs?

No, I got a red one off a guy in Palmy.

Here's a pic of my BX as it was when I bought it.

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff280/fastfrogs/th_052.jpg) (http://s236.photobucket.com/albums/ff280/fastfrogs/052.jpg)

Now it's in pieces in the shed much to my wife's displeasure ("I wish you'd bought an Odyssey").

Gotta give them something to complain about!

Cheers,
Ade

Yeah some awesome roads round Manawatu when you get off the straights. There r a coupla good 'uns round Pohangina from memory in the little valleys. Also if you go north from Palmy I used to always would take the road over Mt Biggs. It joins back with the SH that takes you round the mount and is so much more betterer for fasts.

That's certainly a nice looking car, had a few people on this site drooling when it was on TM a few months back.

Great that it's made its way into the FF fold one way or another!

Got a friend in Palmy who was keen on it too but couldn't sell his other vehicle quick enough.

Good luck with the parts you're after and hope to see you at a meet.

I saw this in palmy just before it went up on TM. It's got a badge on the back which is a silhouette of france in the French colours? I want one!

It's in pieces because I wanted to replace the cambelt, so I merrily pulled it all apart but haven't yet been able to find tensioners at a reasonable price. I priced SKF today and they were $98 each +GST +freight from Singapore. SPEED are about $110+. How does $300 for a distributor cap and rotor sound? or $300 for a set of ignition leads? Bloody highway robbery in disguise. I'm going to place an order with GSF in the UK, so am trying to think of a few other things to get to spread the cost of the freight.

I'm also waiting to buy a new sound system to  install while the dash is in pieces (for replacing the heater valve) - any suggestions? I'm ignorant when it comes to car sound, I just want to listen to the radio and plug in my ipod (wireless would be even better), dont care about CD's.

The car looks good in the photos - unfortunately the paint is really thin and oxidised on the other side, so much so that it won't cut out with polish. It must have been in a prang sometime and repainted on that side. At some time a full repaint will be needed.

Apart from that the car is fairly straight. I'd love to do a total restore someday but that will have to wait for more time and money.

Cheers,
Ade

I have a near-new Mi16 distributor cap and rotor, just not the rear plastic triangular bit. Let me know if you want it (for quite a lot less than $300 ;))

A decent Pioneer/Alpine headunit alone should be sufficent for sound, imo. I wouldn't bother replacing the speakers unless they're poked, I'd be surprised if you could hear a difference in quality in a car. You'd need a decent amp and speakers before I think you'd notice the difference. I don't personally think it's worth the money.

probably keen on cap and rotor if ade isn't, zealot. How old is 'near new'?

also I haven't had much joy putting any real time aside to find a belt or anything this week. Will try tomorrow.

It's the one I got off mini a while ago - I think I'd already ordered one from GSF but it was delayed so I got it anyway. He said it was off his dad's car and had been replaced recentlyish.

Put it this way, it looks in pretty good nick. I'd feel happy putting it on my rebuilt engine.

i got a JVC unit-ipod and bluetooth, came with all the wires and mics, for $380 delivered, probably cheaper now. Wired ipod into trans tunnel cover, mic into
A-pillar. Also have 2channel amp under passenger seat for front splits, and hidden 4 channel running the rear 6x9s and flat sub. Only issue is all the fecking wires in the back of the dash-not much room down there!

Also, while heater apart-lube EVERYTHING. Mine just imploded, all the control wires need to go back on, yay.

I got a set of leads off Adlams for $170-thought that was expensive. Any auto-sparky worth his salt should be able to whip up a set, its the deep reach points that are the only issue, but lots of cars do have em.

That dizzy price is ludicrous, who you using? If its citroen, go nuts at the guy, tell him you will use the web instead. CLowns.

Also, was at Adlams today, hes quite keen to rebuild his white P2 valver. I want. Will have to wait till Dusty gets sick of his, ie never. Was thinking of trying to a valver in as many flavours as possible ;D

Shop around, you will find better somewhere.

Thanks for the offer zealot but I'll probably bring one in from the UK along with a bunch of other stuff.

Ha Ha, yeah those heater control cables and their little fecking retaining clips are a real good joke Mr Citroen. Man I laughed and laughed when I had to refit them on my other BX.

my dad did them-i changed the ABSOLUTE BASTARD of a heater matrix/heater taps, so fair swap- but they mustve come adrift. So once again i have 'one more thing' to fix on my 'completely restored' valver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

give lead set to bnt or rip off co and they will match make up a set quite easily. repco made a set for my mini.
Title: Re: Hello, new BX16V owver

I got a set from the UK cheaper than it would cost from BNT and another place I tried in Auckland.

I actually found it SLIGHTLY easier to attach the heater cable at the control end first, then attach it at the heater valve end second. There's not much room to work, and involves removing steering column surround etc to gain access.
Title: Re: Hello, new BX16V owver
Post by: CaM on September 01, 2010, 11:38:55 AM
some joker from a bnt down south just rang looking for some bits so i pinned him down and got him to look at mi16 stuff

they retail the belt for $35.92+gst
tensioners are $114.77 each +gst.
water pump is $126+ gst for the most expensive of two options. I didn't think there was two options, but there you go.....

I'll check with the joker I deal with in lower hutt here and see what I can do for a bit of a deal. buying two sets of everything may work out quite a lot cheaper. I know straight off the bat that i'll get a bit off those prices anyways.

EML do the waterpump for $75. Terry gave it his seal of approval too.

OK, next question - does anyone know if heater hoses are available? One of the heater valve pipes that go through the firewall was broken on mine, so the dumb buggers cut the heater hoses so a straight piece of pipe could be inserted to bypass the heater valve. Now that I've replaced the heater valve I need to source some new hoses. I could bodge it by using some 20mm preformed 90 degree stainless bends with straight hose between. I have seen the guys in the UK making up whole sets of new silicone hoses on bx16valve.co.uk, but these are 260 quid!
Title: Re: Hello, new BX16V owver

Adlams had aftermarket Ignition leads $137.38 Cap $96.95 Rotor $56.13
Otherwise there are some on ebay uk now and again around half that price if ya get lucky.
Check if they have heater valve pipe as well (Adlams)
I dont think Baker BM are breaking the hoses up, but I can check for ya.
