Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking at buying a 406 coupe, a manual 2L petrol currently in tauranga, however i happen to know that its a UK import, meaning that it has done 146,000 MILES not KMs...
I'd be looking to do an engine transplant, possibly with a 206 GTI or something similar, can anyone tell me if they've done something like this before?

Cheers,
Duncan.

so is that the xu10 engine? if so this conversion has been done quite a bit but not in nz that i know of one other person on this forum was talking about doing the same conversion on ff. The MI-16 is the most popular and easiest conversion on the 205 but more power can generally be extracted out of the more modern xu10.

have a good look though http://www.205gtidrivers.com, there is alot of xu10 205 on there.

keep us updated !

Welcome. What would your motivation for engine transplant be? I wouldn't think a 206GTI engine would offer any appreciable performance gains over the 406 motor. From memory they both produce around 130 hp unless you can find a GTI180.

Manual 406es are fast!

Edit: I assume it's this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=500928960

That has an XU motor so swapping with a 206 will probably be less straightforward than swapping with a 306 GTI-6 motor. By the time you go through that rigmarole, you might be better off just tinkering with the existing 16 valve as they are allegedly reasonably good bases to work from and quite common in case something goes wrong and needs replacing :D

Welcome, perhaps a GTI-6 engine would go nicely? Would you want to put a V6 engine in there?

Hi. They also supplied these cars with 6-cylinder engines (and leather interiors) straight from the factory.

Have a look here http://www.406coupeclub.org/Coupe_Engines.asp

Unless it is a GTi180 motor I wouldn't bother with the GTi swap for 2 more hp.

A XU10 RS(gti6) head on that motor with pistons cut to suit would be sweet, so basically a GTi6 motor, there is a guy in aussie that regrinds XU10 cams as well, mildest grind will net close to 190hp on a gti6 motor, with remapping of course(so a standalone ecu as I don't think anyone here can do the gti6 ecu).

Does anyone know if the coupe came with EW10J4 - RFR engine? (Same one as mine, 206GTi and actually has a significant differences between the RFN engine)

And does this guy happen to work with EW10J4 cams?

I has a fully rebuilt XU9/10 head with PeterT stage2 inlet and stage1 exhaust grinds. And adjustable cam gears.

Just needs installing and timing up. Really needs throttle bodies for full benefits... oh wait, i have those too.

Peter reckons 200hp easy with all the above.

The rewire and computerer thingee stuff shits me, so am sitting on it for a bit
The only thing better than one 16v: TWO 16vs...and a V6

As a possible alternative, would anyone happen to know anyone else specializing in Pug engine reconditioning? As an alternative to replacing the current engine...

Whats wrong with the engine on your 205 exactly?

He wants to get a 406 coupe (XU Engine) on TradeMe but afraid the engine is too tired and going to die anytime soon with 234,000ks on the clock, he would prefer to get the engine replaced while possibly gaining power and/or just rebuilding the engine. Am I right Duncan?

Just drive it until it breaks. The engine will probably outlast the rest of the car.
