Title: Looking for GTi's, VTS, what have you?
Post by: Timotheus on December 09, 2009, 05:49:50 PM

Another Newb for the ranks.  ::)
My name is Tim (yes, Timotheus is my real name - Dutch).
Im new to the forum but not fast frogs.

I bought my mother a 106 gti a few years back sold my toys, headed overseas, came back and got into 4wding.

Now that my wife and I are settling down (bought a cafe, and I got a real job) we need a daily that reflects our customers values and beliefs, not my old beat up CommonWhore.

I really like the 106. I have had some mind blowing experiences over the years in it. So now comes the hard part, finding another one.

I sat last night watching the 205gti over in Frans Josef tick upto $3770 thinking I could have done better with a local VTS (Citroen) I had my name sort of on. Turns out the owner is by no means as much of a hurry as I thought to sell it so I regret not bidding further.

Im not going to rush into anything on account of the failed plans here. But if some one has any thoughts or opinions on any of these...

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Volkswagen/auction-257437206.htm (I know its not French...)

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=254157459

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=259007119

... Id like to hear them.

Id prefer a 106 GTi over a VTS and (without having driven a 306 GTi-6 I cant be that certain) a 306, but like I said, Id like to know any thoughts you have.

Actually, who here can tell me more about a 306 GTi-6? I do like the shape a lot, and 125 odd kw does sound pretty nice in a 1000 odd kg car.

Tim.

Im slightly concerned that the Polo needs arrows on the seats to indicate what direction to sit in it Timotheus.

Im sure some GTI-6 owners will pipe up about how great they are soon...5, 4, 3, 2, 1..

Welcome Tim!

Both of those cars (I didn't look at the other one because it had 'Volkswagen' in the link) would be fine choices, especially the gold one as it has roof racks and better looking wheels.

Only heard good things about the GTI-6, never driven one.

Perhaps read this:

I think you're looking for Saxos but there's a 2000 Xsara VTS in the Citroen newsletter for $5500. Better looking than a 306 imo.

PM me for phone number if you're interested.

106GTI's don't come up for sale very often. one FF member spent 6 months just searching for theirs. while they were waiting they drove an XSi......

you can read all about it here
http://www.fastfrogs.co.nz/index.php/topic,3538.html

the differences between the two models are highlighted also.

I had a read of Bullits write up. Got to the height issues and laughed... See below. Oh yeah, and I have been watching tardme intently since I found my mothers one. Ive seen what has been past and what for. I know of thier rariety.

how tall are you?

if your 6 foot or taller you will have problems in a saxo.

I couldn't turn the wheel as it jammed against my thighs... I'm 6'1 - 6'2 and 106kg... if you nice and skinny you might be ok...

The 106 might be ok if you can adjust the steering wheel... I think i fitted in behind the steering wheel on griffe's car...

How much are you looking to spend on a car?

I laughed when I got to this. Im 6,7 104kg. I have never been comfortable in a car until I bought the CommonWhore. Ive done a few long distance dashes in the 106 including a wet run to Haast. I found it fine. In fact I thought it was quite roomy... The VTS, I didnt get into. I just assumed from the fact it is a 106 with subtle differences that it would have the same seating layout.
Price? Well I can do cash 5k. Any more and I'd like to use the banks money, Im realistic about that and the price i will pay for a gti. But Finance is not an issue, we just dont want to use our money.

Got that Carpentry, read the write up last night. The roof rack would be off before I drove it away. Difference of opinion but I

Everything inside a VTS is different to a 106, different seats, dash steering wheel etc (guess the steering column and pedals are likely to be the same though).  Given your on the large side I wouldnt like to buy one on the assumption theyre the same without trying it.  Its likely theyre pretty close to the same for size though.

Youll be lucky to find a 106 GTi or a GTI-6 for 5 grand but an earlier 306 GTi/S16 or a VTS would be in that price.

I like how many people on here come on asking to buy a 106 GTi...must keep the price of mine up  ;D

I noticed the difference inside, but I suspect the steering and pedals will be the same. I would have driven it (hard too) before any money changed hands.

I know I wont find a 106 gti for 5k, but as I said, I will finance it (I dont have to, but using someone elses money means I can use mine elsewhere)

In my opinion, 6-8k would be right for a 106gti. Thats 306 gti-6 money, so whats good about them?

A friend and I delaminated 3 tyres on a 309 gti during a run to Invers when we were kids. We had no idea when it pulled into the 50 zone and it wobbled like a three legged horse. Fun though. And in hindsight scary.

Hey man welcome.

my one piece of advice would be that wait until something you are dead certain about comes up even if you have to wait (don't settle for less or you may be left wanting) and its always exciting looking out for a car although also frustrating. however you cant go wrong with a french hot hatch

i own a VTS and am very happy with it, i can understand why people would prefer a 106 even though they are so similar but for me my loyalty lies with citroen.

a couple of us might be coming down to dunners for the citroen rally in jan. you should come check it out!

I've got a 306 Gti-6 and it is great.  Quick enough for me (although apparently it has 180 hp - more than standard-  according to dyno - or it used to - the first owner chopped the cat out I think) and fun to drive.  I do quite a few trips down the coast road Westport to Grey, over the Lewis to Chch, and also up to Nelson.  I haven't come across anyone who keeps up in the corners yet, but then there aren't many cars on the roads around here.
Issues - a few things you'd expect with something French - like the passenger electric window doesn't work, radio goes now and then, speedo needle a bit wobbly.  The rear beam was replaced because the bearings in there were shot (I know what the problem was but don't know how to describe it, technical terms are a bit vague).  It's the usual Peugeot problem.  And the front tyres scrub out pretty quickly..

However I've had a budget Jap import 205 Gti, and that was still more fun to drive - smaller and lighter, better steering I thought.  If it wasn't nearly dead (clutch, engine, gearbox, rust etc) I wouldn't have bought the 306.  Less forgiving though I'd say - I wouldn't have the confidence to push the 205 as much as the 306.  But I still entertain dreams of fixing it up and bringing it down here as well.

So I hope that helps.  I haven't driven a 106 but suspect it might be more similar to drive to the 205 than the 306 is?

Hi Tim ... I have a 306 GTi-6 and to be honest it is the best car i have ever owned having had an Audi Quattro a 106 Xsi and a 205 GTi ... I scoured the lands of the long white cloud for a 106 GTi but could not find one .... I found this mint 1998 full service history 306 GTi-6 in Auckland with 117kms on it ... got it for 7 grand ... its a wonderful car ... handles so well on the twisties but also real placid for around town driving ... We had a cruise here the other night in Christchurch and went over the port hills ... I followed a Skyline GTR for alot of the way and he was amazed at how i kept up with him .. sure enough he left me for dead on the straights with that twin turbo but could not shake me on the bends .... If you want anymore info just shout :)

So is it more midrange urge that makes GTi-6's tactile? Or the 6sp box?

Ive read a fair bit about them on some UK site. I havent come across much to dissuade me from them. Keep the right oils in them (gbox esp.), make sure the vario lifters/ actuators (the name beats me) are lifting and drive them.

Thanks for that.

Is there anyone in Whangarei that can have a look at the gold GTi-6 on tardme?

Tim.

106s are cool as small crs. to quote my sister 'they're just like a mini with a good heater, seats, and a bit more grunt, and being able to stop. they even have you sitting crooked' (steering wheels-seat-pedals alignment is very similar to the weird angle you sit at in a mini)

I always found 106s to be unstable at speed, prefering the slightly longer 205. I guess the 306 would be similar?

Hi Tim, my wife has owned both a 106 GTi and a Saxo VTS which she still has.  She bought the Saxo as she missed the 106 so much after selling it, and like others, searched and couldn't find one, so settled for the Saxo. Love them both to bits. My bro borrowed the VTS off my wife when he was in between cars, he is 6ft 5, about 110 kg and has huge feet size 12 -13 I think. He had no issues with fitting in it, but he did drive it with bare feet, because of the little pedals and his big feet. I haven't found any real difference in driving between the 106 and the Saxo, both awesome handling and a heap of fun. The 106 was a lot faster, but I think it was just a fast one, as quick as a Clio 172 we had. The Saxo is still quite quick for a little car with only 120 hp and on a winding road it is very impressive. The 106 was also more economical, it would average 40mpg, the Saxo averages low 30s. The dashboards are different, but the switchgear and instruments are the same. The Saxo only has one airbag compared to two on the 106. I prefer the looks of the 106, but that is as always, subjective. Good luck with your search. Matt

Post by: Timotheus on December 18, 2009, 08:33:33 AM
I appreciate that. I drive in bare feet when driving the 106 too, big feet and a postage stamp sized acc. pedal will do that. I expected the same from the Saxo. I actually like it in that car.

Well boys and girls. If the salesman in CHCH can give us a sharp price on the VW we will be buying it.
I know its probably blasphemus just bring the name up let alone say we are heading that way. ::)

The reality is the Rallye for sale here (although I have wanted one for tarmac racing for years) is too compromised for my wife as a daily driver.

We havent seen any GTi's lately and to be frank, the VW has similar power, similar weight, 2 more doors and is substantially newer.

Ill still be looking for a 106 for myself. In March I will have to replace my CommonWhore. Could be then.

Dont hesitate to A, burn me for my decision, B, Holla if you see/hear of a GTi coming up for sale or C, burn me for my decision.

Oh and if I drive it down from CHCH, I'll let you know what I thought.

Tim.

Hi Tim, I can see your points about the VW with the 5 doors etc. I haven't owned myself, but I have a friend that is VW mad and has owned alot - Golf's, Polo's, Passat's. In driving them,  I found them quite dull compared to the verve of the Frenchies and they cost a lot more to fix than the French stuff. My friend has some very scary repair bills for mundane stuff. In regards to the similar power and weight to the 106/Saxo. A mate at work has one of the 2007 Polo GTi's with the 1.8 turbo. There is a long up hill onramp from the Wellersley (sp?) St entry to the NW motorway here in Auckland, on the several times that we have both left work after midnight and descended onto the motorway, the Saxo has been faster than the VW up the hill, this, of course, is only up to 110kph or so. I've driven the 1.6 Polo GTi without the turbo and it is slower again than the 1.8 turbo Polo. I have always felt the 106/Saxo had a very healthy 120 bhp.

Also, no true gti hatch has four doors, French or otherwise ;)

Its not over yet.

The thing is, the VW is (well to us) a very smart looking car. In my first post, that was one of if not the most important parts. We just have to get Erin out of being seen in an beat up old CommonWhore while representing the cafe. While we really like the shape(s) of '90's Pugs, not finding one fast enough held us back.

I agree with the 3 door - 5 door thing. Dont get me started on convertable 'super cars'...

We have agreed on price and work to be done the the VW and will take delivery some time late this week, I hope.
Ill assess it with a drive to Wellington I think. I'll let you know how we go and what we think.

Tim.

I saw that. I like it a lot.
The Polo ended up at our local VW agent 6 days after it arrived due to a faulty tensioner seal (oil everywhere...). Somewhere someone who did the cambelt reused a tensioner that has an oil seal. It looked like some tapped it back in with a flat head screwdriver apparently. Mindf***.
Its not back yet so I cant say much about it other than its far more remote feeling and understeers too much compared to the 106. A lame car by my standards but Erin likes it a lot. Practical, powerful enough and a smart looker.

Like I said, Ill be looking for myself in April when the CommonWhore gets replaced.

The Saxo though.... interested. Will I buy it, unlikely.

Tim.

and.... the Polo is going up for sale.

so...

Anyone with a 106 GTI looking to sell?

The Poolo is on Tardme. I wont but another one.

I was hoping to be buying another car before it sells but the balances aren't looking good enough. The Fiat is getting 500kms of caning a week. That car is worth every faluty wire rust patch and leaking window.

I test drove a 306 gti-6, thought quite highly of it, noticed what I thought was a tyre out of balance, $90 bucks later and the guy that inspected it told me he wouldn't drive it if I paid him. The list blew me away.

Some sod bought it too.

Anyway, still no 106 GTi's.

This is driving me nuts. It has nearly been a year since I last came across one......

Anyone?

Anyone know about the 309 MI6 on TM? I have fond memories delaminating 3 of 4 tyres in one with my best mate in a canonball run to Invercargill. His sister and brother in-law didnt find quite as funny, in hindsight, I dont either.
