Title: Top Gear statement about the 306 vs 307
Post by: mwb8888 on April 06, 2016, 01:52:44 AM
Hi I remember one Top Gear show that the 306 was a great car, but when the 307 was introduced there was a drop in overall performance and handling?

Is this correct. Or just Top Gear talk from the bad boy.

TG was correct because there was no performance model in the 307 line up when introduced. The mid-life facelift included a 180hp engine (same as the 206 gti180) in a model called the 'Feline', but this car certainly wasn't a gti equivalent - it was still comfort not performance biased and was pretty disappointing considering the claimed engine output.
Not much love for the 307, although it sold well it's generally considered to be one of Peugeot's lesser efforts.

My mum replaced her 2.0 HDi 306 with a 1.6 HDi 307. She actually preferred the 307 (although I suspect her parameters for a good car might not be closely aligned with ours).

For my part, I much preferred the feel of the 306 on the road. It turned in much more incisively and felt far sportier. She asked me if she should trade it on a C4 Cactus, but sadly they don't import any manual gearbox versions. Weird that an 82yo woman would prefer a manual, but there you go...

They sold a million more 307s than 306s, so presumably it was a 'success', even though they were horrible.

The C4 Cactus are so cool, you must have spotted many in Europe, I know I did, most with a manual. I wish they would import more manual cars into NZ.

OK I managed to purchase a 306 Style two door.

But what is a 306 style apart from not having a two litre engine like the GTI6 or SXI.

Still on the hunt for GTI6

I'm a fan of 3 door 306's too...

Differences will be in the suspension and brakes.... all bigger... ;-)
