Title: Hi!
Post by: picklepickle on May 16, 2011, 11:58:32 AM
Hi, new to this.  I'm based in Wellington, and while I don't currently own a French car, I am coveting a Peugeot (I love the look of the 206 GTI, but open to persuasion).

After a bit of searching online, I thought I would register here and see what everyone had to say.

:)

Welcome mate, many members here are from Wellington  :P Loads of people on here can give you advice/information if needed.

Also, deffo convert to a peugeot but not a 206 (only exception gti180 but they spensy)
A 306 gti-6 is an awesome first peugeot and would recommend getting one over a 206 gti
Take a look at these to see if they interest you - if not, theres still nothing wrong with getting a 206 :)

AND a member on here (kyle) maybe selling his nice black gti6 if you are keen.

Welcome along.

There were a few GTi6's on TM (1 or 2 in welly) but they've all disappeared.

GTI 6's rock but in my short experience I
have had a few issues (most of which are quite common),
so there are a few critical checks you would have to do before purchase
of one of these.
Otherwise there could be some unexpected expense down the track.

Also, welcome to FF!

Thanks!  Like I said, open to persuasion and common-sense.  I've only been a passenger in a 306 (unsure what model exactly) and not driven one.

Not in a rush though.  Out of interest, is their anything later model worth looking at?
Title: Re: Hi!
Post by: Bennny on May 16, 2011, 05:07:59 PM
What are you looking for?
Size, comfort, sport, speed, handling, all round wow etc?
Personally I don't like any of the newer model euros that much but that's
just me. (Based solely on the styling) they are gud cars but just not my taste cosmetically.

I'm looking for a replacement car for my daily commute (70+km a day) and other bits a pieces.  For those in Wellington, I'm driving Blue Mountains road out to Whitemans Valley once a week at the moment and in my current car it's not the nicest drive.

I want something that handles well, goes well enough (anything is better than what I have now) and is nice to drive... I actually want to enjoy driving it!

:)
Title: Re: Hi!
Post by: Bennny on May 16, 2011, 06:21:40 PM
Would be a nice drive in a 6.
Prob'ly not be amazingly economical though,
I'm in Upper Hutt, your more than welcome to grab mine and take it
for hoon so you have a better idea if it is the kinda car your after.

Hai hai hai welcome welcome

First up, a GTI-6 is an awesome little rocket ship, but not brilliant as a commuter as I found out after buying one for exactly that. Economical if you drive it nicely- but nobody ever does! Putting your foot down is great as you have lots of power, but it kills you on the fuel bill! I've been driving mine approx 70km a day and can vouch for this! Quite a firm ride too. And yes I was selling mine until I moved up to Palmy- now it's about to go into the shed for a strip down & prep for track day use.  ;D
Lower spec 306 could be better for cheap thrills, but won't have anywhere near the same performance

206 GTI is perhaps a better choice for a commuter, and they're everywhere so maintenance will probably be easier. That said most of us on this forum aren't really fans, styling is pretty bland, performance solid but not amazing, and everyone from Jim Learner to ol' Granny Smith has one. Depends if that's what you want, or if you want to be slightly weird like most of us (I'm looking at you goat!)  :D :D :D.

Slightly smaller frenchies could be Peugeot 106, Citroen Saxo, or Renault Clio- fun to drive but may not be most comfortable to commute in.

Do you like small or big?! (Cars that is)
Do you want newer, or is older ok?
What price range?

Answers could help narrow down the choices...

Did I mention welcome?
Title: Re: Hi!
Post by: cammmy on May 16, 2011, 09:42:04 PM
Pee dub, yours is boned as :D Can't really judge the ride unless it's standard.

I'm obviously biased but a BX 16v would be sweet. I lived in Maymorn up until last month so I know that road well and the BX suits it. In saying that though the GTi6 is still better(read - faster) over it.

16v and GTi6 both have okay fuel consumption I think (sub 7L/100 on a long journey in mine with a moped in the boot). Just gotta be frugal on the throttle.

Bennny is my brother so more than welcome to take his for a hoon and then mine to compare. Both excellent cars and I would have either.

True, but I was commenting on standard ride. Don't reckon standard is actually a much softer ride at all.
Was gonna say bx, but needs a bit of care to keep running sweetly, so dunno if that's what she's after.
Will tell us idc I'm sure.
Title: Re: Hi!

should be awesome and buy something like this mate.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Citroen/d/auction-262582557.htm (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Citroen/d/auction-262582557.htm)

perfect?
hah

only downside is they're not very quick, and it takes a while to get used to the fact that, although they hold the road amazingly well, they flop round like a cock in a shirtsleeve with the amount of bodyroll they exhibit.

:D

If you're down like james brown for a 206 though, go and test drive a few and see waht you reckon. For the mileage you're doing, although it's not *that* high, look to perhaps the diesels as they've got really low fuel consumpton and the economy may outweigh the RUC and rego costs still.
other things to consider, perhaps (and they're sooo cheap) are citroen Xsaras. Im starting to really like the look of them. They;re built on the same platform as late 306/206 anyways i think.
Depending how much wedge you're looking to spend, a citroen C4 might fit your requirements too.

Again, Welcome along. we're all rather enthusiastic about our frenchies, are perhaps a little eclectic in our tastes in other hobbies, but best of all we all get along swimmingly, and are always keen to help.

Ben and Cam: I love how you guys are prepared to let someone you've never met go for a hoon in your cars, the only rewards being a potential new pal, and/or knowing you've helped extend the love/lust/want/desire/NEED to own a french car to another person. top marks. You guys are choicer than choysa, which, although many old women go weak at teh knees for their weak teas, isn't as choice as you jokers.

They also did the 206 GTI in a wagon which has two extra doors and a different boot layout which you may or may not find useful.

Smaller car. I currently drive an old five door hatch (a Laser), so don't want anything bigger.
Would prefer something newer.
Ideally up to 10k, but I have a bit of wiggle room.

Saw a GTI 180 on Trade Me and had to stop drooling. Was definitely a bit on the spensy side though! I also want to feel safe and like I am attached to the road... something the current Laser doesn't offer!

Thanks for the offer to guys! I might have to take you up on the offer. I've driven a standard 206 but nothing else...

I would get a mint 306 GTI-6/S-16(6speed) for that $ then spend $2-3k on some minor modifications like putting on nice tyres, a de-cat pipe thats not too big, ebc red stuff pads, poly bushes all round, lowering it 30mm etc.. you can also get a supercharger kit that will give it 220hp without major engine work being required.

Yeah you could build a killer '6 for 10g. Probably wouldn't stretch to doing charger though....

But seriously (for once) lets stay on topic of finding miss pickle a sweet ride that will also be a good commuter yeah?

I'm obviously a big fan of the 306 GTI-6, but for what is wanted a 206 GTI fits the bill, is a little newer, and plenty of low km examples around to choose from so you can just buy & drive without having to start replacing parts as they wear out. Eg

For your best bet go for one that has service history and the cambelt recently changed.

Edit - for my $ I'd get the third one, all ready to go & has colour-coded bumpers...
