Title: Hello from a newbie - Citroen BX 16V
Post by: cams16v on August 06, 2009, 09:33:00 AM
Hi All

My name is cam, and I am very new to the whole french thing.

To give you an example I have owned rotaries all my adult life and have spent $$$ really $$$, but I still enjoying seeing the odd old one.

But a couple of days ago I brought a Citroen BX 16 Valve and my opinion has changed some what!

Absolute love the car and its a pleasure to drive and fun!

I will put some pictures up when I have given it a clean.

I look forward to meeting some new friends and your comments

Kind Regards Cam

Yep thats one off trademe I brought for $1710 which was more than I was advised on paying but decided that you only live once.

Actually my father is big on french and italian cars, and I had mentioned that I wanted to buy a PUG 205 GTI but my budget does not stretch that far at the mo. But I saw this and asked around and I thought it would be a good start. And can I say Im loving it so far.....she's a bit rough in areas but I like that and I will drive it every day to work and get as much enjoyment out of it. I may start to restore it but not in the near future.

Sorry to the other person who I was bidding on it, but you now have another french car lover to join the crew one would say.

Regards Twin Cam

So far I would have to agree, but I might be being biase just a tad.

Actually one of the reasons why I brough was the spec's

160 bhp + 1070 kgs = great fun

I was actuaaly quite surprised having owned some quick cars along the way in my life, and for front wheel drive she stick to the road like shit to a blanket, maybe im not trying hard enough?

I have started to read some of the threads and look at members cars, and it seems that its a good group of people. I look forward to talking to you all over time.

Haha, i bailed at 1500. But my inner winner kept me bidding :D. Still, i think you got a bargain at 1700. Such a lush whip.
Swap for my 8v GTI plus 600 your way?? Hah

It was hard not to go any further as I had strict instructions not to go over 1500 but I had taken it for a drive the weekend before and Knew what's 200 in the scheme of things.

Thanks for the offer but I want to enjoy the french experience for abit longer than four days  :D

if you gonna stick with factory sizes, go the michelins- good ones. The car is made for em, vice versa the tyres, so you might as well. The only reason i dont roll michies is that 16 and 17s are OMFG expensive.14s not too bad a corner. You can go 205s on the front max.

The 16v has made it on its maiden voyage to Feilding. Great drive along highway 32 from Tokaroa to Turangi the bx loved the long straights and highspeed corners. Also had a bit of fun from Vinegar Hill to Cheltham, very Targa driven :P The car loved it no problems heating wise or missing beats. Have to be one of the best drives so far very comfortable and alot of fun, even the digging of the elbows from the Mrs was not to bad as she's starting to come around. Cant wait for the drive back to Auck's, which way should I go?

Regards Twin Cam

Have to say, one of the best drives I have done in a while. She handled so well even when I pushed her quite hard. No over heating, no strange noise, very comfortable all in all AAA+++.

Extra bonus..... just worked out that the car did 410 miles (not 410kms as prevouisly thought) on one tank of Gas which is about 660kms to a full tank which is 66 ltrs....1 litre per 10kms :)

Down side is I thought I brought a car that had done 187kms which is really now 300kms :(

Hey Cam, I'm new to this site too but not new to 16V's.
Looks like you've got hold of a nice one there - I've always liked them in white.
Sounds like you've also been bitten by the 16V bug.
You'll hear lots of jokes about poor reliability and bits falling off them but as you have discovered you get one in it's natural habitat - travelling medium to long distance on the open road and you fall in love.
I once had the pleasure of driving mine non-stop (literally) from Wellington to Auckland, enabled by two things 1. the unusually large fuel tank meant I didn't need to stop for gas and 2. my wife was already in Auckland so there were no 'comfort stops' required.
It was 6.5 hours of uninterrupted driving pleasure, on the western lake road (the one you have pics of) and round through Matamata to avoid the main traffic flows.
I got to Auckland and apart from needing a toilet stop myself, I could of turned around and come all the way back again.
They're such an awesome car on a trip like that, the perfect mix of supreme comfort, good cornering and awesome acceleration for overtaking - especially uphill.
You don't realise how good the seats are until you hop into something else after driving the BX for a while.
Enjoy your car, and after a few trips I'm sure your wife will appreciate it too.
Cheers.

Thanks mate

I was not expecting to be "bitten by the bx bug" as you say, as my intentions were to buy a cheap run about but something that had a bit of go and was a little different to my normal buying car procedure eg fast, espensive $ jap.
Yes its not perfect and I have slowly started to replcae parts, even though I said I would not as its probably not worth spending to much on. But I cant help it she's such a pretty car and needs all the attention I can give her LOL well im sounding like a right bx freak!!!
You have a real nice BX16v there and like everyone has said really low ks. I am moving down to Palmy at the end of the year to live so I look forward to meeting you on the the rest of the lower North Island FF's campaign.

Regards Twin Cam

Hey Cam, how did you get on with your tyre selection?

I used to always run Michelin (kind of belong on a french car), the Pilot MXV 3A V-rated ones which weren't cheap.
I had been advised that if you put lower rated tyres on your car than the manufacturers original spec's you ran the risk of your insurance company declining any claim. The insurance market is probably a bit more user friendly these days, but it used to be they would look for any excuse to turn you down.

Had to look for alternatives when Michelin stopped making that tyre in the right size. Currently running Pirelli P6000's after trying Pirelli's on the 309. The P6000's have lasted well and I've had no reason to doubt them on the corners.

My 2c.

Yeah tyres? hell they dont make to many good tyres in 14" do they! I want to stick with the original rims because they look good.

Options -

Nankang - XR611
Goodyear - goodride/assurance
Dunlop - lemans LM600
Falken - ze329
Yokohama - adrive/cdrive
Pirelli - P6000
Bridgestone - Guardian/Turanza
Hankook - Ventus r-s2 z212/optimo K406

At the moment on lending towards dunlops? mayne I need to start a poll on tyres as there seems to be a large debate on this.

How about 2 Yokohama directionals 195/60r14 for $55 fitted and balanced, yes they are seconds with about 4mm of tread. I hear you saying cheap bastard, but its just to get WOF as I cant make up my mind on tyres??????? ???

Yeah, those tyres sound like a good option if you need more time to complete your research.
4mm tread is OK (depending on your driving style and conditions) WoF fail is 1.5mm.
The 14" rims do narrow your tyre choices somewhat, but you're right - you can't ditch those rims Cam, it's all part of the 16v package.
The two tone ph2 ones are sweeeet.

Yokohama C-Drives seem like the potentially the lushest easy to get thing in that size. AFAIK they're pretty chur. Not directional, but assymetrical. Also, top-end Bridgestones aren't even directional any more so yeah/na/I don't know, directionals probably aren't the great white hope they're made out to be.
