Who's going, and which day(s)?

Loled @ this

http://www.nzfmr.co.nz/info_pages.php/page/What%20To%20Wear/pages_id/11

QuoteWhat to Wear
Gentlemen

A gentleman will always look debonair wearing a blazer, turn-up flannels, accompanied by a cravat, a Panama or Homburg hat and don't forget a touch of Brylcreem, of course. A rolled-up umbrella, cigarette holder or eye-glass will finish off a top-class and sophisticated look that even Cary Grant or Terry Thomas would admire.

A country gentleman might wear a sports jacket, trousers and braces, with check shirt, tweed hat or flat cap, and a woven tie. Accessories could include a pipe, binoculars in leather case and a shooting stick for that 'James Herriott' look.

Perhaps you might prefer a mechanic's white cloth overall (with charcoal for oil stains), leather boots, and accompanied by a flat cap, leather belt and clockwork stopwatches; alternatively, be a 'rebel' and dress as a Mod or Rocker!

A man in uniform is always a pleasant sight for the ladies, so why not wear an Army or RAF uniform from the period.

Ladies

For that sophisticated couture look, epitomised by Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, try wearing a voluminous dress clinched with wide belt, slender high heels, glamorous hat with matching sleek gloves, and seamed nylon stockings.  Striking make-up with polished 'de rigeur' look, dark eyeliner, false lashes and bright red lipstick is essential to complete this immaculately groomed look.

If the classical style of the English country garden is more appealing, how about a floral summer frock or twin set and pearls and matching tweed suit, accompanied by a 'church' hat, fox fur, small handbag and gloves to match.  A little bit of rouge wouldn't go amiss either – Miss Marple and her friends would doubtless approve.

For a more daring, casual look, try a flared skirt with petticoat, topped with a brightly coloured jumper.  Or maybe a pair of trousers or capri pants and short-sleeved blouse, with pumps or deck shoes, and bright scarf knotted 'cowboy' fashion at the neck.  Dark sunglasses and vibrant red lipstick were also an iconic fashion of the era – think 'Marilyn Monroe'.

For that post WWII era, why not try a uniform, always a smart and neat alternative?  Be a WREN, land girl, police woman or nurse for the day!

Need an outfit?

The New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing recommends a visit to Gracey's Costume Hire in Pukekohe (website www.graceys.co.nz).

you jokers should jsut be really grubby and roll everywhere with a cigarette and grubby flat cap talking like dibnah. add a greasy alsatian and have your girlfriend have messy hair, and wear gumboots with her 70s style dress for that real 'stationary engine enthusiast' look

From the programme it looks like identical full day of racing both days instead of qualifying and crap on Saturday so perhaps Saturday will be the better day as they'll have had less opportunity to break down/crash etc?

full grids of f5000 is awesome

lols at 'historic' racing being quicker/awesomer/pulling bigger crowds/expensiver/bigger fields, than our current national 'premier' single seat race class. Must be abit dangerous with so many on the track... I wonder how long before one of the gentleman racers gets killed. Those things arn't exactly safe by todays standards.

They should re engine formula toyotas with those old pushrod toyota v8s. Or just move to formula libre rules. Keen to see Kenny Smith rip up in that Layton House, march F1 car he has in his garage/ he probably couldnt afford to put tyres on it let alone start the engine

The F5000 racing isn't exactly cut-and-thrust though is it. None of that classic racing really is. I mean it's fantastic to see them going wheel to wheel in brilliant old machinery, but you'll never see them doing the marginal 50/50 moves you'll see in modern motorsports which have easily replaceable parts/cars etc.

Of course there's always a risk but.

That was a sick race meet! absolutely loved all the cars there and especially the pit area. looking at all of the technology from back in the day was a blast. i took 551 photos so wont post them all but will put up a few once i sort through them  :-X  :D

almost wish i grew up in that era just for the motorsport!

Wow, I hadn't realised the F5000s were that quick. I was under the impression that the TRS cars were still quicker.

I'm planning a daytrip on sat to Puke - missed the Hampton Downs one so I figure the pug build can be put on hold for a day to see them :D

Went to pukekohe yesterday. Was orsum as untill it started to rain :D

kenny smith was lapping in the 55's. Soooo fast. The atlantics were also pretty sweet, i havnt seen a big field of them before.

spent like a hour in the maclaren tent standing beside the james hunt f1 car beside steve millen waiting for the rain to stop but it didnt :'( so we went home

the norton single cylinder f3 cars were choice, as was the green citroen spyder thing

Went to Puke too, was sick. I dug the Mk I Cologne Capri, and race-bodied capri's that were there. Was talking to Neil who drove the Fleetwood Mustang, and he was talking about driving the Ferrari 275 down at Hampton Downs, followed by the McLaren F1... He's owned/driven some pretty quick cars before, but he said it completely blew his mind, apparently he was mentioning something about it having the race-spec 700hp GTR engine? Damn these lucky bastards....
