Title: New Auk - 309 GTi and 405 Mi-16
Post by: Stafford on February 02, 2010, 11:31:08 PM
Hi all

I have just returned from overseas and joined up here tonight.

By way of background - I have a dark grey 309 GTi in the garage; a red 405 Mi-16 under repair (for the last 5 years - don't ask!!) and a Xantia engine being stored to one day go into the 309.  The Mi-16 was bought to do the Mi-16 conversion but I couldn't bear to wreck the Mi-16 so I ended up with both!  I have also owned a 505Gti for a time.

I must say that I haven't seen many Mi-16s or 309's on the road.  Anyone on here own one of these?

I may well ask one day if anyone has put a Xantia engine into a 309 (or 205)...

Cheers

Chris

Hi there

It is the XU10J4.   Hi had a bit of a squizz on AussieFrogs when I bought the engine last year and it seems to be a good conversion to do - see extract from a post on that website below.

"Any of the XU engines are a relatively straight forward fit. However, there are pluses and minuses for each! XU9J4 engines are very long in the teeth now and any you'd find would most likely need a full recondition. However, they are light and easiest to fit. Once reconditioned with more compression are very difficult to go past. XU10J4 engines are a mix between old and new. All the benefits of the old XU9J4 head but on an iron block. XU10J4R engines are relatively common, and although have less power on paper, have bags of torque. An inlet cam and ECU swap will turn them into a very nice package. The XU10J4RS is obviously sought after, but given the relatively few cars they were released in, are difficult to find and more expensive. All XU10 engines wear quickly in the bores if serviced poorly.

If I was building a street car for myself, I'd use an XU10J4, shortened XU9J4 inlet manifold, XU9J4 power steering pump and an after market ECU."

We'll see mate!  Do you have plans for your 309 also?

Chris

Hi Chris, good to see you finally found FF!

You still haven't finished that Mi16?!   ::)....but I guess I can talk.  Every time you walk/drive passed my garage you must think - will he ever finish those 205's?

We will have to catch up some time...

Cheers

Reon.

Is that 8v or 16v?

Plans for my 309 are: palm it off to some unsuspecting sop :D

...yeah can't say my 309 is on the road at the moment exactly.  Two pugs in the garage and driving a terrano.  Oh dear!

Reon:  I do wonder where you are up to with the 205's each time I pass by!  Not as much as our respective other halves wonder I would guess.   Catch up soon.
