Title: Mangaweka Train Tunnel Mish
Post by: k-trips on May 30, 2010, 08:52:38 PM
We've talked about it - now lets do it...

I am suggesting 20th, 21st - do the walk along the tunnels on the Saturday.
Get on the Razz at "the Logs" accomodation on Saturday night
Then on Sunday the Steam train will be coming north about midday and we can go watch it come out of the Mangaweka Tunnel at full tit which is always a thrill..

Also have to do steam trip to taihape in suits...

HOLY SHIT!!!

Step 1: Everyone dress in suits. I'll roll the double breaster with fedora.

Step 2: All pile into the newly wof'd '35 Austin 6

Step 3: Cruise at 40mph to the train.

Step 4: Ride steam train and giggle like school girls.

This is more about the mish to Mangaweka to check out the tunnels rather than the steam train ride which we will do another time

So whos keen and who ya bringing?

I can organise the accomodation fairly easily. http://www.rra.co.nz/accommodation_logs.htm (http://www.rra.co.nz/accommodation_logs.htm)
Do we need to ask the farmers or just risk it on the day?

As long as we get at least 5 or 6 of us it should be a good deal. $25 each for accom plus gas and supplies should be a cheap weekend..
Any alternative dates suggested?

I'm keen.
Do you reckon you could have a go at calling the jokers?
Also, repost that map. I'll email my brother it and get him to ask a few dudes at a remote, whole weekend pissup he's going to in taihape about the dealio.
would be dumb to go all the way there and not be able to see anything.

also, can I suggest we take this route? makes for some deviation to the monotony of state highway one.

Title: Re: Mangaweka Train Tunnel Mish
Post by: CaM on May 31, 2010, 03:16:31 PM
it's a pretty sweet drive actually. there's a gorge toward the mangaweka end which used to be constantly a muddy slurry of slip waste hah.
it used to have no armco and be little more than a lane wide thrugh alot too until a couple of years ago.... the first time my sister drove that was in my 205 and she had lift off oversteer going in the wet. so scary! nutter.
but it's a nice drive, nonetheless. we could extend it by going down though apiti, and rolling gravel out through pohangina and coming out at ashhurst, where we could go and be lower than simon's corona.

Just got told by charters that the steam train towing the Overlander that weekend has had a major mechanical problem.. So won't be able to watch that burst forth from the Mangaweka tunnel on the Sunday....  :-(

Will have to suffice with watching Diesel POWA burst forth!

Funny story - in primary school, when I was little(r) and more tomboy-ish I used to refuse to be included with the girls (cos they were lame).
I do like tunnels though.

So what/when/where is this trip that I may or may not be coming to...?

Just got a call back about the Logs Accomodation and they are booked up that weekend..

They heartily recommended this place instead..

http://www.cairnmuircottage.co.nz/page.php?14 (http://www.cairnmuircottage.co.nz/page.php?14)

http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/mpl?ie=UTF8&moduleurl=http:%2F%2Fmaps.google.co.nz%2Fintl%2Fen_nz%2Fhelp%2Fmaps%2Fholidays%2Fmapplet...html&mapclient=google&ll=-39.773153,175.795176&spn=0.005813,0.013915&t=h&z=17 (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/mpl?ie=UTF8&moduleurl=http:%2F%2Fmaps.google.co.nz%2Fintl%2Fen_nz%2Fhelp%2Fmaps%2Fholidays%2Fmapplet...html&mapclient=google&ll=-39.773153,175.795176&spn=0.005813,0.013915&t=h&z=17)

Problem is its $40 a head (fixed).. instead of the $25ish (variable on numbers) of the logs..

The place looks pretty damn fine and I'm still keen - what say thou?

(I am still waiting to hear back from Cairnmuir if their place is available..)

I'm pretty sure I can dig out a crockpot and bring with - chuck all the ingredients in on arrival and on return should be a lush feed awaiting - chuck in some Naan/Roti and pretty sure if I die that night, I'll die happy..

Do we purchase foods en route or should I just do the mega shop and everyone chuck me cash on the day?

either or.
or we could (as you may need stuff from weirdo ethnic food place) grab a list of stuff and do a 'bring some of this' list

I reckon a fast shop on the way up would be awesome. Everyone pushing trolleys round making car noises. Lift of oversteering into shelves etc.

I've just confimed booking for this Saturday - she said we can rock up Sat morning and can have late checkout on Sunday..

She confirmed that Cairnmuir supplies most necessities except food and personals.. (they have no crockpot)

Shopping list..

Pantry basics are taken care of by lodge

Lunches can be got on the road
Drinks - BYO

What else do we need??

^Is that list each or all up :D

When you say they take care of everything. Does that include bedding or are we needing to take all that?
Title: Re: Mangaweka Train Tunnel Mish
Post by: k-trips on June 14, 2010, 11:08:52 AM
thats all up mang - unless you are keen to eat 6 rashers of bacon and a dozen eggs for breakast on Sunday..

Bedding is included - can't harm to take a sleeping bag to chuck on top of ya duvet in case its turbo cold..

Agree completely on wheels-make the 16v a relic from the 80s, then you change em and the car looks COMPLETELY different. I funking LOVE my car on the black 17s, looks amazing, but the handling is shit, as i cant afford really good tyres-will be 235346356 times betterer with new spheres though.

Cams 15s in black on semis should be the biz ;D
