Title: New to forum, 205GTI
Post by: blv205gti on March 31, 2013, 11:47:19 PM
Hey, recently purchased a 205GTI from a friend, its in really rough shape but engine is still pretty sound, I come from a nissan/BMW background so know next to nothing about these cars.

Checking through trademe it seems the parts are pretty hard to come by too, the cars heater/blower doesn't work at all and it seems to like to short out the front windows too, any suggestions where to check first for the short?

Going to spend tomorrow cleaning the exterior/interior then I'll upload some pictures, apart from the electrical issue its a pretty awesome car to drive, surprised at how fast it feels. Its already stickered with fastfrogs (how I found the website), so I know it used to be a forum members car!

welcome mate! We have a pretty vast stock of parts amongst this forum so a ask and we may list..... As for your heater it will either be the heater fan its self or there its a control resistor card thing rite next to it (the most likely cause) they are both in the passenger foot well and very easy to access, just check weather the fan is getting good power etc and with the window just try swapping the switches around first then start getting gritty with wires

It hasn't been serviced in far too long, hahah the air filter is silicon'd on, I'm going to take it to my mechanic friend to get it all serviced up (he's worked on my parents 306xt since forever), gotta take her for a WoF and get a list of whats wrong then get it all fixed up, quite surprised at how ridiculously fast they are, my flatmate owns a GTR and I used to own a 300zx TT and to be honest this car is actually alot funner to drive, haven't even had a proper thrash in it yet since the tyres are all terrible brands and chirp going round corners in 4th...

Thanks for the advice on the heater/blowers! Its also using quite a bit of gas and idling pretty high so hopefully mech can sort that too, I bought it as something to get me too and from work in winter whilst I'm saving for a 964. (I bmx'd all last year but kept getting sick after being soaked every day)

Oh if anyone has a link to any threads the car was in, I'd really appreciate it, numberplate is XP9594 and has a wee french flag on the front of the hood. Its missing its fog lights how much do those usually go for ? (would love to buy a pair if anyone has them)
Also any tyre recommendations, its not going to be targa'd etc just daily'd to work and maybe the occasional piha run.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I'll look into them then and thats super close to my work too which is awesome, I think it needs new brake pads too, any brand recommendations/what to get also?

Really appreciate the help!

if you want good pads that will stand alot of fast driving and track stuff the go here

http://www.znoelli.co.nz/ (http://www.znoelli.co.nz/)

otherwise for A to B just hit BNT or Repco

Awesome, asking around my friends and what not its just "you'll have trouble finding parts for that or you wont find brake pads in NZ you'll have to import", I'm really glad I joined this forum I've never had so much hate towards a car I've owned as I've cop'd with this one hahah!

Lucky I own the numberplate "YOUMAD" ;D cant wait to put it on this car

Depending which brakes it has, it could be a good time to upgrade the calipers too...

Brakes are responsive and pretty amazing but just a bit of a squeal starting to happen occasionally,
I think I found a thread of the car:
http://www.fastfrogs.co.nz/index.php/topic,5232.0.html (http://www.fastfrogs.co.nz/index.php/topic,5232.0.html)

I cant go to the link posted in there for  the sale of it (which probably has more details about whats been done to it etc) because I don't have 10 posts yet, arrrgh.

Its mentioned that its a CTI not a GTI? I got no idea haha.

Have a check of your brake wear then, both pads & rotors. If you post up some pics (here's how) (http://www.fastfrogs.co.nz/index.php/topic,238.0.html) we can help you with some options. Plug - I have spare big GTI calipers as I recently upgraded my 205 brakes.
Your car is a GTI, the CTI is the red convertible next to it in a couple of the photos.
Get posting then- you'll make it to 10 pretty quickly!

Oh, & welcome!  :D

Yeah I just checked wiki and stuff when I got home from work hahah!
I'm gunna get my mechanic friend to check her over pretty soon, I do car photography as a hobby so once I've cleaned her as much as I can and ironed out the dents the previous owner kicked all down the side of her =[

The interiors totally poked too, I dont think this car has ever been garaged in its life, anyone know of good replacement seats for them? I want recaro's but apparently they sit too high and the seat rail mod doesnt look like its going to be any fun, my current seats have a bit of play in them so accelerating feels more intense than it really is, hilarious but starting to get over it!

far out this was my old car that i brought back from the queenstown. it has been around the block. hope it treats you well. i did heaps of work to get this pup going. glad to see its still going well  ;D

Haha, it sure hasn't been treated nice, I'm going to get her all running again but in its current condition I dont think its worth doing up, especially if I'm saving for another car, targa'd but not maintained doesn't equal a happy pug :/

And oh god the wiring. I've never seen a fuse box emit a spark so bright the entire interior lights up, handy but blowing 40amp fuses aint cool.

Bit of an update, needing new coolant hoses but cant source them? anyone know where to get them? dipstick broken and started venting crank case pressure, spilling oil all over and down the back of the motor.

Also anyone have any spare rear brakes? mines the 1.9 which I thought had front and rear discs but the rear has drum brakes..which dont seem to be very good either, handbrake hardly does anything and wont hold on steep-ish slopes.

Will know what else she needs soon but at the moment its new dipstick, rear brakes, possibly coolant hoses, front CV's are pretty munted but have been quoted 1k each side to repair/replace if they can find the parts.. yikes.

Even still, for the time I've had her she's been amazing to learn manual in, even with a broken gearbox, I can't imagine how much fun one of these is thats in good nick, I've been driving her like there's an egg under the accelerator as I didn't want to thrash it and didnt know condition til I took to mechanic.

Hoping to get her wof'd and running for juuuust under 1500 so far, which is 600 more than I payed for the car but if it lasts 6 - 9 months thats all I need her for then will sell and get my 964!

Cam16v on here is the distributor for BakerBM parts including silicon hoses...

Sounds like you have a jap-spec car that came with drum brakes. Conversion requires replacement of stub axles & hubs before you can fit disk brakes- you may be better off adjusting &/or replacing shoes...

If you want someone to check it over go take it to Greg Kent, 80 Diana Drive, Glenfield & they'll be able to sort out everything you need.

I probably have the handbrake cables you will need to convert too.

I'll let you guys know on friday what my mechanic think about the brakes/parts I'll need. I figured it'd be hard to get parts, my first thought was to go the 4k budget option and fix the entire car up but I need it for winter so I don't get soaked bmxing home at 2am from work, so unfortunately a patch up til a)she dies or b)I have enough for the next car.

To be honest, I'm almost tempted to scrap the porsche idea and buy a nice 205gti instead, I had no idea a small car could be so fun, even just driving the speedlimit it feels like a go-kart, I'm so used to larger cruiser cars so never drove anything like it.

All of your responses are much appreciated and I've already learnt so much from this forum, thank you so much for helping me out with advice!

Unfortunately a 900$ car has turned out to be just that...a 900$ car but if I can at least have it for 6 months I'll be very happy with the experience.

Oh and one last thing, the gearbox...its a tad sloppy, hard to tell what gear you're in, linkages are prone to dying in these gearboxes from the little amount I've read on them...

linkage pivot bush kit might help that sloppy feel and relatively cheap too

Have put in a hybrid zombie super coolant system now, all the hoses etc were perished so have had rad fixed and replaced hoses with various toyota/honda new ones that fit.

I'm renaming this car Peugeot 205gti zombie edition as it has clearcoat peeling, horrible paint, dents, and now jap parts in it.

New tyres soon, have repaired and got the rear brake light back on the hatch, fixed the mirror back onto the windscreen up front and sorted the coolant system, now just need to de-grease and clean up the engine bay, fix the psycho idle and MAYBE get a working blower/demister again.

Woo with progress like this she should have a wof next week! Also gearbox getting a "spruce up" so its nice and tight again, once I get the receipts and details of all work done I might post up a project thread and take some pics.

Wow, so the car got a wof! Just got the txt from my mechanic that I can come pick it up whenever. Will let you guys know the full list of what was done to get her back up and running, didn't end up too expensive.

BUT, the CV's werent needed to be replaced for the wof, but eventually need to be done, only quote I got was 900 each side then someone who said 70$ then promptly dissapeared (are most mechanics like this with the GTI?).

Do I a) Limp it around for 6-9 months as gently as I can til I can get a better car
Or do I b)do the CV's and then limp it round for 6-9months, buy a nice car and keep the pug as a runaround?

ARGH

Hi Mate.  You might want to check out eBay uk for some of the smaller parts you are looking for.   I am slowly doing up a 309 gti and have got a few parts off eBay uk recently.  Eg a new dipstick was around 25 bucks landed I think.  Pound is pretty weak at the moment so prices can be less than you might think.

Well, gearbox has been freshened up, engine bay de-greased and cleaned, all hoses and radiator replaced/fixed. Managed to get a wof as well, stupid thing keeps blowing fuses for the windows but apart from that and it loving to surge when cold its pretty fun, its nice having a gearbox that you can actually feel what gear you're going into as well, that one was so munted..

End cost was 1300 D:, quite a bit done that I haven't mentioned but came 200$ under budget which I'm really happy about.

First impression: Apart from it hating to idle when cold, this car is probably the funnest thing I have ever driven, handles like its on rails and feels quick doing 50, so for a daily driver, I'm extremely happy!

Never would've thought a french car would be this fun/involving. Especially one that cost 900...

Quotenumberplate is XP9594

Hoooooly shit - that is my old car!!! Kinda surprised it's still alive to be honest...  ::)
She was in pretty rough nick when I bought it and that was in 2006. It was my first frenchie - I didn't know much about them but a friend had been telling me about 205's and how fast they were. Jokingly, I asked a guy in my polytech class if he new anyone selling a GTi and he said his mate had one with a blown headgasket that was just sitting there. A quick call to studylink later, for err, bus money... and I procured the beast for $1300. Towed it back to a friends garage and spent a week learning how to change head gaskets on a "modern" car (had only done them on Kseries' before then and thats a 10bolts and 20minutes kind of job). Ha, when we got it running we couldn't figure how to get it into reverse so just pushed it out of the driveway (left the learning about the pull the trigger up business till later).
Sweet memories. Still remember how good the thing handled and how fast it was compared to anything I had previously driven.
I sold it to some scottish guy who lived on the west coast when I wanted to buy my first motorbike (lasted a month before blowing up... should have kept the pug). Only other time I saw it was on trademe a few years later, pretty sure it had made it to Otago and had had an engine swap or something.
Psyched to hear it's still going!  :)

Dude thanks heaps for the info, I'm trying to get as much info as I can on whats already been done to the car etc, haha she runs a bit rough now at idle, loves surging, I downshifted to 2nd to go over a speedbump slowly and got a pretty decent flame out of the exhaust, was not going fast or giving her anything..stupid amounts of fun and its more of a fun go-kart than a car.

But oh my god this car loves to blow fuses for the windows! Drivers window was stuck down overnight, replace fuse, only the passengers window goes up and down, drivers refuses to budge. Turn car off/on again and give the drivers door a tactical punch, window goes all the way back up...

Is half the fun of owning these cars dealing with all the hilarious and persistent little niggles they have? I've never owned anything this tempermental and have literally been in tears of laughter when friends come for rides in it and ask about all the things that dont work.

Ie, "why doesn't the tacho work past 2000rpm no matter what speed/gear you're in",
Me: "its more of a suggestion"
"why does the fuel gauge constantly go from 1/4 up to half and back again"
Me: "its more of a suggested amount of fuel..."
"why cant I wind my window down"
Me: "the window buttons are more of a suggestion than actually usefull"
"why does your car have a sunroof that doesnt open"
Me: "uhhh its more of a 'roof-window' than a sunroof"
"why can't I go near the windscreen"
Me: "blower switches are more of a suggestion, if you breathe on the window I can't see"

I'm 23 and this car makes me feel like a giddy child that just got that starwars lego set I always wanted.

i bought the car when i lived in queenstown from a the flatmate of the scottish guy. i am also scottish. i bought it as a non runner. put a second hand engine in it as no4 cylinder was cooked. put all new engine mounts and 2 lower control arms on it then. think i did brake hoses all round too. was a good little car but i had a real nice 205 so it only got driven once and a while. i brought it back to auckland when i moved and it lay in the driveway and then carpentry wanted it then he didn't then i sold it to revieled.

was a good little car i just couldn't justify 2 at that point.

and yes it does make you feel younger driving one. just ask downunder

Its amazing to see how much this car has gone through! Thank you so much for the info, I saw an amazing mint red 205GTI today at smales farm and I had a good gawk as it drove past, SO mint, some kind of rally personalized plate, also saw DRTDVL on the motorway heading back from manukau on monday I think, 205's look SO good with roll cages, I was in a 5 series BMW and could still hear you coming as you passed us hahah!

Getting more and more tempted every day to use porsche fund to buy a nicer 205gti and keep the munted one as a daily..

^^ is a good plan just finding a nice 205 aint so easy. But well worth the wait. Also 205 with a few mods will nail a standard 964 around the track imo. Different story if you could afford to mod the 964 though  ::) all comes down to budget in the end, as is such with any kind of motorsport.
were you thinking tiptronic or manual 964?
Title: Re: New to forum, 205GTI
Post by: blv205gti on June 18, 2013, 05:03:51 PM
Really keen on a manual but if a tiptronic comes up in hard top for the right price I'd definately consider it, I more want the porsche as something to hide away for weekends and as something I can sit in and make revving noises in the garage.

Or maybe I could park my pug behind  it, and start her up so I can I listen to a rough as surging idle, and pretend my porsche has a worked inline 4 motor.. Hahahah!

Much research to go on the 964, it doesnt seem like one of those cars you can just forum read-up on and suddenly be an expert, I've read lots but I think Porsche's are a little different from the jap and other euro's I've owned, from what I've read so far.

And need to have at least 25k saved to test drive one hahaha!

Ah are they not very good gearboxes? Only tiptronic I've driven has been BMW and was not quiiite as responsive as a manual but still quite fun, like I said I'm still researching the porsches, and reading online people have such mixed opinions on them!

I'm actually swaying more and more towards saving for a nicer 205gti and putting good money into it to make it really nice, I love what people have been doing to VW golf's etc of the same era and I'd love to make something unique (well unique amongst my GTR and RX7 toting friends haha)
