Thought it was about time I introduced myself. I've been driving a blue 306 around Wellington for a good six months now.

It's my first car and I can't get enough of driving and fixing it. I'm looking tips on restoring the paint on the roof and bonnet and possibly an engine conversion at some stage.

Cheers

Welcome

How bad is the paint, picture?

Thanks

The clear coat on the roof has had it, and there is some rust.

Similar situation on the bonnet.

Welcome along! Faded paint seems to be a very common issue with our old cars. One of my BXs has paint with the same texture as a blackboard. Although it is red. Perhaps a redboard..?

Your roof rust should be dealt to asap - it was probably caused by some muppet doing a windscreen change and garking the paint down to the bare steel. I have the same issue with one of my cars, and it has actually led to rust starting on the inside at the bottom of the A-pillar. The windscreen needs to come out, the rust cut away, and new metal welded in.

If you are keen to avoid cost (and aren't 100% picky about the finish), you could DIY the paint - I think Supercheap now offer aerosol cans of paint based on each car's paint code. Buy some sandpaper and a can of Prepsol and get into it!

Thanks for the advice, I think I will give the DIY paint job a shot. Is it possible to just remove and recoat the clear coat on the roof along with the rust repair of course.

If you're chopping up the roof to repair the rust you'll need to repaint it all anyways.

Is it an XS/XSi/Style or what? If it is a lower spec (and you're thinking of an upgrade), I'd imagine the lowest cost option is the way forward so you can save for a nice 16v model?

Good call. Yes it's an XSi, i'd like to put an Mi16 in there or similar otherwise if I had the money i'd definitely get a gti6.

The mi16 engine is an older version of the s16 engine. I wouldn't bother...  Save the money and get either an s16 or a gti6.

The whole car? I'm thinking so, after some digging I noticed there was a cheap s16 in the for sale section not long ago.

Yeah the whole car.  Once you factor in oils,  time, ecu, engine, plumbing Loom etc... And engine conversion can get pricey.

Don't forget the s16/gti6 also had better suspension and a few other things.
