Hi,
Does anyone know anything about this car? Looks pretty honest.
I had a bit to do with a 106 clubsport in the late 90's as a trackday tool after the series finished. It was the ex Patrick Watts car. He laid out a few 1.15's or better at Puke and do you think I could get anywhere near that?
Always appealed and want to get back into a nice roadie.
Any info would be appreciated.

Hiya Dave, and welcome  :)

I don't know that particular car, and I've come across about half of the 106 Rallyes in NZ. As far as I can tell the description matches what I can see in the pics. It appears to be in generally good nick (apart from that door, which could be fixed fairly cheaply).
As you probably know the race series cars were 1994 models, and AFAIK most were road registered as 'clubsport' after 3 seasons of racing, with only the engine tweaks, motoform wheels, and bonnet pins remaining from the race spec (mine also had colour-coded wing mirrors). That car appears to be a standard Rallye, but modifications are quite tasteful imo.
If you're looking for a track weapon you may be underwhelmed by the lack of outright power, but overall I think it'd be a good fun car for short commutes and/or occasional weekend blasts/track days.
6k ain't a steal, but probably a fair price. I'd point out damage + rust spot and try knock price down a bit. If you got it for 5k I'd say it'd be a good buy.

Thanks mate, all good info.
Nostalgia really, loved these years ago (and an AX11 and GT) so having another go. Also need a bit of a project to work on. I'll take it on the track when sorted and safe but not so interested in outright speed - there is as much fun in momentum driving as point and squirt. Have a couple of flat six German coupes and modern hypo hatchbacks that fill that need. Looking forward to getting it up to scratch and just driving it. Your thoughts on value are helpful, not too worried about that side but always good to know what they are going for.
Dave.

Keeping them on the boil is half of the fun of these (as is keeping up with/outpacing much more powerful metal in the twisties).
I sold my clubsport for around that price approx two years ago. It's likely that one day in the future I'll want to own one again...

Who would you chaps recommend as the go-to garage to look after these things? I can do some of the work but run out of talent and dexterity pretty quickly. First job is getting the clutch engagement point back down towards the floor a bit.

Have you bought it?
If you're in Auckland you best bet is Bishops (Edinburgh St, off K Rd).

Yeah, I got it. Will get it home and make a list. Goal is to get it looking good, fix the panels and drive it. Hope to pick it up tomorrow. Not sure exactly what it needs yet but will attend to it regardless - so good to know a reputable garage who knows what they are doing. My daughter is getting her learners and I want her to master a manual transmission. The other manuals in the home fleet are a bit challenging so this should be nice and easy for her and a bit of fun for me.
