CRACKATTACK

Gday guys, looking into buying a 406 and was just wondering if anyone had a rough price of what a clutch replacement would cost in a v6 and any particular things to look out for when checking them out besides all the usual suspects? Are the really that expensive to maintain and unreliable? I've been reading a lot of horror stories, crazy electronics featuring heavily  ???

Cheers

Welcome!
A clutch kit for a 406 V6 is $800 and then it depends if you want labour done or you are going to DIY.
Most horror stories are from dweebs who don't know how to maintain a car properly.
Things in particular to look out for are;
Coils - you need to check if they have the updated design coils as the original coils are a faulty design.
Engine mounts - Common Peugeot problem for the engine mount (Particularly top mount) to have cracking rubber
Electronics - Not as bad as it sounds, just make sure every feature, button, switch, lever, etc works as well as checking the warning lights on the dash or error faults on the MFD.
Drop links - easily replaced and cheap so no biggy.
Cambelt - Expensive job to do.

Then the rest would be general wear & tear you get with any car.
I find that they are not expensive to maintain unless you HAVE to buy a new part from a dealer. 2nd hand parts of aftermarket parts from UK are usually cheap.

As long as you don't get an auto, service it regularly, it will be reliable and are great, fun cars to drive.
What year 406 are you looking at getting? The facelift V6 engines (plastic inlet manifold engine) are a lot better and more updated.

Welcome. Not sure about clutch replacement on one of these, but you should look at buying this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/peugeot/auction-671831553.htm. It's one of the members on here and is a seriously good buy at the asking price (the paint can be fixed much cheaper than a new clutch that's for sure! A lot of us are tempted but just have too many cars already!
