Hi,

What a great website!!  i stumbled across it a few weeks ago and will definately try and put some photos up. i am a HUGE French Car Admirer and about 5 months ago I purchased my first Peugeot, a 91' 205 GT.   WOW...What a fantastic car!!   i have always liked the design and when deciding to downsize it was the obvious choice.   I tossed up between the GTI being the obvious choice (1.9l) but went for the GT (1.4l) as I prefered the minimal trim and am not too much into sunroofs etc... but,  earlier this week as I was driving home from work it started to make a clicking sound for about 5 minutes or so then completely died right in front of Te Papa...    ???  I have since taken it to a mechanic and he has informed me that the cam belt slipped a cog and the valves/head are (....)   The cost of repairing/replacing this is quite alot so have decided to replace the engine, maybe with a 2.0l,  which was my long term plan that has, over night, been turned into a very short term plan.   My mechanic said this will be fine but the brakes etc... will need to be upgraded also, which is what I assumed anyways.   Having not owned a Peugeot before and definately wanting this to be an on-going project for me,   I was wondering if anyone out there could pass on some GOD-LY advice as to which engines will exchange easily,  maybe I just need to keep the same cc rating that I have but whilst I'm in the whole for a couple of $G anyway I figure I might aswell get a bigger engine installed now rather than at a later stage...

Your thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated

Graham ::)

hello

man thats bad luck!!!

yes wht awattt (who has beat me to the first post again!) said. mi-16 405 is the best way to go as it is a 16V 1.9l or 2.0l. depends on the year of the car. the erlyer 405's have an alloy 1.9 and the latter have a 2l iron block. but if you are going mi-16 do a bit of reaserch and take the first one you come accros as they arnt common because all us 205 owners snap them up really quick (i.e. usually buying a whole car). the easyer way could be to work a 1.9 8V out of a 205 GTI. maybe even turbo a jap spec GTI. that would be cool as no one on here has done it yet!

Brakes try find (once again not common so jump on any oppertunity) 206 or 306 gti brakes bolt straight on and the holy grail of straight swap brake conversion is the 4 pot brembos frm the late model 405 coupe's. if you do get bigger brakes ull probly want to swap for a bigger master cylender as long travel brake pedal is a scary thort for me. the guys on here usually use 306 master cylenders i think.

the biggest thing is finding all these parts in NZ as they arnt abundent. so getting all the bits together is the biggest time consuming part of it all.

also you could look at doing a 309 GTI suspention swap. the 309 gti has 20mm wider track (frnt a-arms and rear beam). doing that swap transforms the car entirely in my opinion as i have done it to my gti and would highly recomend it.

ok ok ill stop blabbling the best thing to do is RESEARCH. look for english fourums etc they have all done it before and have heps of info.

Cheapest and easiest way to get your car up and running is source a new head from somewhere. Its a pretty easy job to replace a head, can do it in an afternoon.
Do you think that $400 is a reasonable price to be forced to pay for Euro style plates? If not, see this link and sign the petition! http://www.fastfrogs.co.nz/index.php/topic,2188.0.html

My advice-buy an MI16 and wreck it, not a BX 16v! ;D
The only thing better than one 16v: TWO 16vs...and a V6

1991 Red/Black BX 16v Phase1 D6C-projected into house.bugger
1991 Red BX 16v Phase2 D6C- restored
1998 Silver Xantia V6-family rocket

hold on a sec, surely the TU engine mounts are going to make an XU engine swap of any kind a lot more difficult - i know you even need to do some retrofitting when mi16'ing a 205 XS, which has practically the same engine bay as a gti  ???

gt + mi16 = complicated

Hi All,

Thanks soooo much for your advice, it's been extremely helpful.  I have had a look today at a CJ that might be a possibility for a straight same size swap.   It's in pretty good condition aswell but have to see how much he wants for it.  I have also been given the number of a guy in wellington who does alot of parts and things for peugeots so he is also going to see if there are any engines around.   i think replacing the head (if enging is ok) just to get it going and then take my time to get a decent whole car to exchange engine etc... maybe the most resonable option for me but we'll see what happens next week.   Will keep you posted about what is happening and when I get the car back will upload some photos.

Thanks again for your advice, it's GREAT... :P

The s16, gti-6, gti 180, and mi16 are all common/becoming common engine swaps for the 205's

the gti 180 is more of a conversion than a swap, all the mounts are different and the brake m/c and servo have to be relocated

mi16/s16/gti-6 swap into a 205 GTI is easy as pie  :D

You need to see what mounts are under the bonnet. Some can take a Xu engine but some cant with out welding in the Xu style mounts to the inner wings. On the inner wing tangent, Xu style shells have strengthening too that TU's dont have.

A lot of work and a lot of stock needed to do swap. but it can be done. easiest way is to get a 205 GTI
91 Peugeot 205 GTI MI-16
11 Ds3 Dsport HDI (Becky's)
97 Peugeot 306 Dturbo
1995 Citroen AX GT

Hey,

A quick update,  everything seemed to be going pretty slow but today I managed to get my hands on an engine, unfortunately it's the same size but since reading your responses and speaking to euro car specialists I decided to do this, as the transplant of a larger engine is definately going to be a fairly complicated process, computers etc...  maybe I will just have to get a GTI but will see what I can do with this baby 1400 first.   Got engine for $400,  only really need head, which seems to be good,  car only done 100,000 k's ?? (according to speedo) so hopefully its all good.   Once head is machined etc..  what could possibly could go wrong :D So everything should be done and dusted next week and then I can focus on the more important things like hp.

Came up to Auckland last weekend from Wellingtron and must say I was very disapointed.  I didn't see one single 205 the whole trip there and back.  Seems to be plenty of 306's etc...  did see a few citroens in Auck's though so that almost made up for it.

Keep up the good work.
